It should come as no surprise that virtualization technology helps companies increase their operational efficiency through
server consolidation, application re-hosting, disaster recovery and ease of software testing and development. With Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007
, businesses now have complete support for consolidating their Microsoft based physical servers within their virtual datacenter. These new Microsoft virtualization products provide the ability to rapidly
provision and deploy new virtual machines.
With this training CBT, Tim Puszynski will guide you through the design, planning, deployment and forward management of your virtualized infrastructure.
Microsoft is the largest software company in the world. With virtualization technology here to stay, do not get left behind. This technology will only continue to grow in all aspects of computing from server
operating system virtualization to application virtualization to network virtualization.
If you are just starting out in IT server administration, trying to advance your career, or simply learning
more about different virtualization technology's for a job requirement, this CBT is for you. You will gain more knowledge about server virtualization and management with a practical and hands-on learning
experience.
This Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 CBT contains 10 videos as follows:
* Module 1: Introduction to Virtualization & Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007
* Module 2: Planning & Installing Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 * Module 3: Managing Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007
* Module 4: Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 & working with Hosts * Module 5: Working with VM's, P2V & V2V conversions
* Module 6: Templates, Hardware & Operating System Profiles * Module 7: Managing the SCVMM Library
* Module 8: VMM Jobs & the Self Service Portal * Module 9: Reporting & Troubleshooting
* Module 10: Clustering, High Availability & Scripting
Module 1: Introduction to Virtualization & Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 In module
1, the basics of Virtualization are discussed and explains why virtualization has become so popular in the datacenter. Additionally, we discuss the general components that comprise Microsoft System
Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 (SCVMM). This is a great starting module for MS SCVMM.
Module 2: Planning & Installing Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 This
module walks you through the installation requirements as well as the actual installation of SCVMM 2007 using the necessary software files. In this module, we pay close attention to server and network
design while taking into consideration virtualization growth and capacity planning.
Module 3: Managing Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 This is the first look at the
SCVMM console. Here, we navigate through the different parts that make up System Center VMM. We also learn how to utilize the console and how to better manage our virtual infrastructure using
this new management tool.
Module 4: Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 & working with Hosts This module is very exciting because we work with the virtual machine hosts. The main purpose
of SCVMM is to manage the Microsoft Virtual Server hosts and guests. We really take a close look at virtualization here as Virtual Server 2005 is the main component of virtualization. This is a really
cool module especially if you have never worked with virtualization technology before!
Module 5: Working with VM's, P2V & V2V conversions This module walks you through the creation of
Virtual machines, working with Templates and Master/Gold VM builds. Learn how to quickly provision VM's, how to configure VM's and how to tweak their resources for optimal performance. In addition to
learning how to create a VM, you will learn about physical to virtual conversions. You will see how Microsoft SCVMM uses its P2V conversion utility to convert a running Windows 2003 Active Directory
Domain Controller from a physical machine to a virtual machine (All done while the AD DC server is running in production). Brace yourself for an amazing module filled with information.
Module 6: Templates, Hardware & Operating System Profiles This modules builds off Module 5 and continues to walk you through the creation of Virtual machines, working with Templates and Gold
builds. Here you learn how to utilize templates and profiles to quickly provision VMs. You will see how these profiles allow us to tweak a server's resources for optimal performance.
Module 7: Managing the SCVMM Library Much of the virtualization groundwork has been laid down up to this point. Here, we dive into the MS SCVMM library and learn about what makes the SCVMM
console work. You will learn about the different resources that make up the library and learn how to manage these library resources.
Module 8: VMM Jobs & the Self Service Portal
In Module 8, you will see how jobs work and what the importance of jobs are. Think of jobs as automated tasks that help manage the virtual infrastructure. In addition to jobs, you will learn
how to let users of the virtual infrastructure manage their own VM's based on rule sets that you create.
Module 9: Reporting & Troubleshooting If we spent all of this time building a
highly redundant virtual environment, what good would it be if we had no way to monitor all of the components that make up the virtual infrastructure. Here you will see a Microsoft System Center
Operations Manager server built that allows us to enable the reporting features for the SCVMM. You will also learn how to troubleshoot issues that may arise within the virtual environment.
Module 10: Clustering, High Availability & Scripting Business continuity and high availability are discussed here when the concept of clustering is discussed. Here you will see
demonstrations of virtual machine clusters when live VM's are powered off and their standby cluster servers "come to life." You will learn how to design a virtual infrastructure to be as
highly available as possible so that you can achieve the 5 9's that companies desire. Lastly, you will learn about scripting within the virtual environment. You will see how to automate tasks
like building virtual machines or changing VM parameters.
